Flotilla 82 is celebrating its 80th year of being always ready to serve our country. At Flotilla 8-2 Cape May, we take pride in being one of the most active flotillas in the nation. In our 80-year history our flotilla has maintained many traditions, the foremost one is being of service to the U.S. Coast Guard and the boating public in the beautiful Cape May coastal community.

Below are just a few of our volunteer traditions. People seeking to ‘give back” to our country through service are welcomed and encouraged to inquire about the many opportunities to serve. You don’t need to have boating knowledge or military background, just a desire to join a team that enjoys being part of something larger than themselves. There are many opportunities for training based on your interests.

  • Boating Safety Instruction - Boating safety training classes are held for the public every boating season. Our instructors provide the latest material available from the U. S. Coast Guard. The classes also meet New Jersey Boating Safety Certification requirements.
  • Vessel Examinations - We help boat owners feel better about their safety by offering free annual vessel examinations at multiple local marinas as well as at their own residences. Our trained Vessel Examiners perform dozens of boat examinations per year on all types of recreational vessels. Boat owners sincerely appreciate what they learn during the VE process. They have the satisfaction of knowing that they are prepared to keep themselves, their family and friends safe in the event of an incident on the water.
  • USCG Culinary Assistance - Every Friday for approximately 45 weeks per year, our trained culinary team assists in preparing and serving up breakfasts for over 300 guests attending recruit graduations at USCG Training Center Cape May. Their friendly and cheerful attitudes are often the first encounter at the Coast Guard Training Center for many guests who have traveled far to see their “Coastie” graduate from boot camp.
  • Remembering Sacrifice - Each year for over 60 years Flotilla 82 has been commemorating the military members who have given their lives in service to our country in a very special way.  Every Memorial Day Flotilla 82 members decorate a flower boat that is part of the Memorial Day observance held on Cape May’s beach.  Under the waving Stars and Stripes presented by the USCG Honor Guard, there is the blowing of taps by the bugler, followed by a twenty-one-gun salute after which the flower boat is launched by members of the Cape May Beach Patrol and towed out to sea by a U.S. Coast Guard vessel. It is one of the most solemn and beautiful displays of appreciation for those who gave their all that someone will ever observe.
  • ATON Maintenance - The local waterways can only be as safe as the Aids to Navigation permit. Flotilla 82 assists USCG Station Cape May by verifying the location and condition of each waterway daymark and buoy in the waters of the Atlantic Ocean, Delaware Bay and inland bays and tributaries.
  • Coast Guard Cutter Watch Standing - Want to make a friend of a Coast Guardsman? Volunteer to stand their watch. After the necessary training, some of our flotilla members augment the active-duty personnel at Station Cape May to stand watch in the radio room or as Office of the Deck on one of the Cutters.
  • Seamanship School Instructors - Seamanship is foundational to the development of a Coast Guard recruit into a qualified "Coastie".  Some of our members volunteer their time to teach line handling and knots to the recruits at the Coast Guard Training Center.
